Symbian UIQ3 Modding (Part 2)
As promised from a while back, this is part 2 of the tutorials: Installing ported apps from the G900. The G900 is the latest offering (and probably the last) of a smartphone running UIQ3 from Sony Ericsson. It has the same specs as my P1i except for a 5MP camera and it also has a much improved user interface which sadly aren’t available on the P1. This is where the mods come in. At the moment there are only two mods available. One utilises the camera LEDs and the other is a nifty little app…
We will be taking another trip swmail’s homepage (which can be found here, again if you have a few quid to spare consider donating to his causes). This is probably one of the most straight forward mods you can come across. Simply download the file and extract it onto the memory stick. With CapSwitch switched to “OFF” simply run the installer and ta-dah! You know have a Torch function on your P1. Why this wasnt implemented by SE defeats me. The P1 sports 2 ultra bright LEDs which are used primarily for taking pictures. When you launch the torch app (which can be found under tools) you will see this:
What each bit does is pretty self explanatory unless you lack any common sense so ill tell you!
On for 1 Minute: This switches the LEDs on for one minute and automatically switches them off
On: Turns the LEDs on for as long as you want
Off: Opposite of On
SOS: This bit uses Morse code to flash out the letters S O S (. . . _ _ _ . . .)
Well that’s pretty much it for the torch function.
Next we have the notes ported from the G900 (with thanks to Gapata, who also ported the Torch app). The standard note application is very basic and can only record text notes (i would post a screenshot but that app no longer functions on my phone).
This is the main Menu of the ported Notes application. As you can see it looks very much like the well known Post-It notes. These notes can be set to different colours and they can be organised into different folders such as Business, Personal, Urgent etc.. And if you require reminders an alarm can be set to alert you (see screenshot)
This is the part where you can enter notes there is a choice of either text input from the keyboard or if you prefer to doodle like i have done, you can use the stylus to write notes and draw smiley faces (and penis’ for the immature). Using this app is pretty straight forward so i shan’t go on about it. Right now to install it on your own phone! You will need to download the installer file from here you will also need the patch to enable the original notes application to use the same database. Before installing make sure CapSwitch is at the “OFF” position. Run the installer like you would with any other on the phone and go through the simple installation process.
That’s it for the G900 ports, hopefully there will be more on the way and when there is you know where to find the tutorials! Next week will be a tutorial on how to turn your P1i into a Walkman phone!
